How will I be taught?
The teaching structure for Postgraduate trainees at Haybridge is designed to provide a balance of theoretical learning and practical, hands-on experience. Here’s a breakdown of how you will be taught throughout your training:
1. Theory of Teaching (Central Education Programme)
- One Day a Week: All Postgraduate trainees are required to spend one day per week studying the theory of teaching. This is delivered through lectures by the SCITT teaching team and subject experts.
- Interactive Sessions: These lectures are not just theoretical but are designed to be interactive and engaging. They aim to link the theory directly with real-world teaching scenarios, ensuring that you can apply what you learn to your own teaching practice.
- Location: The theory sessions take place at Haybridge High School, Hagley, providing a familiar and relevant setting for your learning.
2. Practical Experience in Placement Schools
- Full-Time Trainees:
- You will spend four days per week in a placement school. Initially, you will be observing experienced teachers in action, learning from their expertise.
- Gradually, you will take on more classroom responsibilities, using your theoretical knowledge from the Central Education Programme to shape your teaching practice.
- This school-based experience ensures that you put your learning into action and get to see the day-to-day realities of teaching.
- Part-Time Trainees:
- You will spend two days per week in your placement school. This allows you to gradually immerse yourself in school life and teaching while balancing your studies.
- The part-time route allows you to gain a deep, hands-on understanding of the school year cycle, meaning you won’t miss key events like parents’ evenings, Theory and Practice
- By spending time in schools from the very start of the year, you can immediately apply the theoretical knowledge taught in the Central Education Programme to real-life teaching. This full-year experience ensures that you see key teaching moments and progress through the academic and extracurricular calendar.
3. PGCE and QTS
- PGCE Delivery: For those pursuing a PGCE with QTS, the PGCE sessions are delivered onsite at Haybridge by specialist lecturers from Bath Spa University. This eliminates the need for trainees to travel to Bath, making it more convenient and accessible.
- Access to Bath Spa University Resources: As a trainee in this program, you’ll not only receive support from Haybridge SCITT but also have access to Bath Spa University’s academic resources, including their library and student support services, enhancing your learning experience.
4. Overall Teaching Approach
- The approach is designed to be student-centered, ensuring that you are actively engaged in your own learning journey. Interactive lectures, practical school placements, and real-world teaching experiences ensure that you are well-prepared to handle the challenges of being a teacher.
- The balance of lectures and practical experience allows you to gradually build both the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary for a successful teaching career.
In summary, the combination of theory-based learning at Haybridge High School and practical placements in schools allows you to immerse yourself fully in the teaching process. This method ensures that you develop a well-rounded understanding of teaching, ready to apply your knowledge in the classroom and gain the PGCE and QTS qualifications.
