Competitive salaries and generous benefits
You may be eligible for a teaching bursary or scholarship when training to teach. These are tax-free amounts of money you receive to train in certain subjects. You do not need to pay them back. You’ll need a first, 2:1, 2:2 degree or a PhD or master’s degree to be eligible for a bursary, as well as meeting the bursary scheme’s individual terms and conditions.
For the 2026 to 2027 training year, the Department for Education are offering bursaries of:
- £29,000 in Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics and Physics
- £20,000 in Design and Technology and Languages
- £5,000 in Biology and Geography
For 2026 to 2027 scholarships are also being offered of:
- £31,000 in Chemistry, Computing and Physics
- £22,000 in French, German, Spanish (no other languages)
Scholarships are awarded by organisations with a passion for their subject area. They combine tax-free payments with extra benefits like subject-specific support, mentoring and networking opportunities. If you’re eligible, you can apply directly to the scholarship provider.
You cannot receive both a bursary and a scholarship.
If you receive either a bursary or a scholarship, you do not need to pay it back.
