How to apply

In the first instance, please contact us for an informal discussion about your plans to train to teach. We can then offer you a half-day tailored to your requirements:

  • To discuss what we can offer during your training year
  • To spend time in the school environment observing teachers and students
  • To help set up a ‘school experience’ week
  • To ask all those questions that may influence your decision

If you are lacking in school experience, you should consider a place on the School Experience Programme run by the Department for Education. Again, contact us if you want to discuss this further.

Applications are checked by schools in the Haybridge Alliance SCITT to make sure that necessary selection criteria are met before shortlisting is undertaken. We request two references – one of which must be an academic reference from your university or sixth form / college. We are interested in references from your university or sixth form / college, employers (if applicable) and teaching staff from the school where you complete your school experience.

We will then organise interviews as necessary with the final decision on offers being made by the school.

Applying for Initial Teacher Training

The Department for Education came to Haybridge to make this short film with our trainees about applying for school-based training.

Selection Process

We offer an intensive training year which demands your full-time commitment. Our rigorous interview and selection process will help us decide whether you should train with us, and also help you decide if teaching is the career for you.

Curriculum Knowledge Interview
This will focus on your subject knowledge together with your ability to engage and inspire.

Lesson Observation
This will give you an opportunity to observe a lesson.

Presentation
You will be required to undertake a 10-minute presentation on “How to be an outstanding teacher”.

Formal Interview
This interview will be with the Primary Programme Lead. The interview will evaluate your rationale for wanting to become a teacher and your suitability to carry out the role.

Teaching Activity
Applicants will undertake a 30-minute teaching activity. You will be asked to prepare a topic to present to the pupils. This will evaluate your ability to facilitate pupils’ interaction with you and each other.

Written Task and Mathematics Task
In accordance with the DfE guidelines we will need to ensure that you have the necessary skills in Mathematics and English to become a teacher by the end of your training year.

You will be expected to demonstrate competence in range of subjects throughout your course:

  • Speaking, listening and communicating are fundamental to a teacher’s role. Teachers should use standard English grammar, clear pronunciation and vocabulary relevant to the situation to convey instructions, questions, information, concepts and ideas with clarity. Teachers should read fluently and with good understanding.
  • Writing by teachers will be seen by colleagues, pupils and parents and, as such, it is important that a teacher’s writing reflects the high standards of accuracy their professional role demands. They should write clearly, accurately, legibly and coherently using correct spelling and punctuation.
  • Teachers should use data and graphs to interpret information, identify patterns and trends and draw appropriate conclusions. They need to interpret pupil data and understand statistics and graphs in the news, academic reports and relevant papers.
  • Teachers should be able to complete Mathematical calculations fluently with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages. They should be able to solve mathematical problems using a variety of methods and approaches including estimating and rounding, sense checking answers, breaking down problems into simpler steps and explaining and justifying answers using appropriate language.

Trainees and students are responsible for securing the required fundamental English and Mathematics skills. Haybridge Alliance SCITT will support both trainees and students in this process and it is the SCITT’s duty to ensure the trainee can demonstrate competence.

The process for assessing your skills will start at the interview stage and it is important that you begin to develop your confidence and competence in these skills prior to the start of the course.

Hear the stories from the people who chose Haybridge Alliance SCITT

Why should trainee teachers or schools choose Haybridge Teaching Alliance? Hear from real people and their stories on how Haybridge Alliance SCITT has helped them in their teaching career.

Training with Haybridge Alliance SCITT has been life changing. It has given me access to the very best advice, support and teaching practice to enable me to develop as both an individual and a teacher.

During my placements, both of my assigned mentors went above and beyond to make sure that my experience was as beneficial, yet at the same time challenging as possible. The knowledge and expertise shared by both the SCITT staff and the staff within placement schools has been invaluable and has undoubtedly helped me to develop on my journey to becoming a teacher.

Steven
English trainee

Everyone has been really supportive, positive and reassuring. It has been good to be back at Haybridge – now as a trainee, rather than a student! The year has been very rewarding and engaging.

It has been full of content with lots of lessons to learn, but also truly inspiring and an excellent platform to start my teaching career. Thank you for all your help.

Chloe
Primary Trainee

I would recommend Haybridge Alliance SCITT 100% today, tomorrow and forever. This journey into becoming a teacher would not have been a success for me without their dedication. Every push and all feedback that came my way from the SCITT was essential to master the art of teaching. Haybridge Alliance SCITT has provided me with the most exceptional environment, which a trainee teacher needs to exceed.

Darpan
Computing Trainee

I would highly recommend Haybridge Alliance SCITT as a training provider. The support and encouragement has been immense, in particular from the SCITT team and teaching staff. The subject-specific mentors based at Haybridge have been incredible at imparting their knowledge and providing guidance and I am extremely grateful to them all!

Lauren
Biology Part Time Trainee

I chose Haybridge Alliance SCITT because I wanted to gain hands-on experience in an outstanding school where I can learn how to teach. The programme is challenging but also very rewarding.

The Monday professional sessions are of high quality and were designed to complement the practical modules. I really feel more confident and passionate about becoming a teacher than ever before. The support of mentors and staff is phenomenal.

Abdoul
Computing Trainee

Teacher training is a very rewarding, but at times very difficult journey. The team at Haybridge Alliance SCITT understand that it can be difficult and have been very supportive at the times when the going has been tough and for this I would definitely recommend then. I’m glad I decided to go with Haybridge as I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot more teaching than I would if I’d picked [a university route].

Nick
History Trainee

Love, love, love this course! The support from the SCITT team is incredible, really outstanding. Learning to teach straight away and teaching almost immediately was such a benefit. The students only see you as their teacher and you can take it at your own pace.

I am so happy that I chose to go down the SCITT route as I have loved every minute of it and would recommend it to anyone looking to do a teaching course.

Pippa
Music Trainee

So far, I have learnt a lot on this programme and I am really enjoying learning how to teach to the best of my ability. The support on the course has been exceptional. I know I can ask for advice on anything in school and I will get good guidance. Completing the Paid Mathematics and Physics Internship was a great experience for me. It gave me a month in the educational environment and really made my mind up that I wanted to go into teaching. Without completing that, I feel I would not have enrolled on this course.
